A Guwahati court has sentenced Md Kamruj Zaman, a key accused in a 2017–18 Hizbul Mujahideen terror conspiracy case, to life imprisonment.
The NIA special court convicted him under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Indian Penal Code for plotting to establish a militant module in Assam to instill fear.
Three others pleaded guilty and were convicted; the fifth accused died during the trial.
Zaman, also known as Dr Hurairah or Kamaruddin, faces concurrent life terms, a fine of ₹5,000 in each case, and additional jail time for non-payment.
The case highlights India’s ongoing counterterrorism efforts in the Northeast.
