Global displacement exceeds 117 million as fragmentation, funding cuts, and anti-refugee policies hinder aid, UNHCR chief warns.
UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi warned in his final interview that global fragmentation is worsening crises and undermining peace efforts, citing rising anti-refugee rhetoric, restrictive asylum policies, and severe funding cuts—particularly from the U.S.—that forced the UNHCR to cut staff by a third and reduce aid.
Despite inspiring acts of solidarity, such as Colombia’s support for millions of Venezuelans and Syrians returning after regime change, Grandi stressed that over 117 million people are displaced—nearly double the number a decade ago—and no nation can address global challenges alone.
He criticized the "my country first" mindset as counterproductive and endorsed his successor, Barham Salih, Iraq’s former president and former refugee, as a strong leader for a difficult role.
El desplazamiento global supera los 117 millones debido a la fragmentación, los recortes de fondos y las políticas anti-refugiados que obstaculizan la ayuda, advierte el jefe de ACNUR.
