Disney to pay $10M to settle COPPA violations over YouTube’s handling of children’s data.
Disney has agreed to pay $10 million to settle allegations it violated children’s online privacy laws by failing to properly label YouTube videos as child-directed, allowing unauthorized collection of personal data from minors under 13 without parental consent.
The U.S. Department of Justice said the settlement resolves claims that Disney Worldwide Services and Disney Entertainment Operations breached the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
As part of the court-approved order, Disney must implement a compliance program to review each YouTube video for child-directed content and is barred from operating on YouTube in ways that violate COPPA.
The case, initially referred by the FTC, underscores federal efforts to protect parental control over children’s online data.
