Commodore Andrew Brown RNZN (Retd) has been awarded New Zealand’s Distinguished Service Decoration in the 2026 New Year Honours for his leadership during the October 2024 grounding and sinking of HMNZS Manawanui off Samoa.
With 75 people aboard, all were safely evacuated.
Over five months, he coordinated New Zealand and Samoan efforts on environmental protection, salvage, diplomacy, and crisis management, emphasizing collaboration with local leaders and supporting scientific water testing that helped lift a fishing ban.
He credited the success to teamwork across NZDF, government agencies, contractors, and Samoan officials.
Though recently retired, he remains in the Reserve Force.
