China will extend its Yellow River fishing ban through 2030, expanding it to three new major tributaries, covering the main stem and 13 key tributaries.
Starting January 1, 2026, year-round bans will apply in the river’s source and upstream areas, while a seasonal moratorium from April 1 to July 31 will cover the Ningxia-to-estuary stretch annually.
Commercial fishing will be prohibited except for limited, quota-based fishing in designated areas and for specific species.
The ban, initiated in 2018, aims to reverse declining fish populations, with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs working with nine provinces to strengthen enforcement and conservation.
