Interim Vice President Hugh Clements, a former Providence police chief, announced plans to implement card access in all buildings, expand blue light emergency phones with cameras, install additional security cameras—especially near Barus and Holley Halls—enhance emergency communications, boost training for staff, and strengthen coordination with local law enforcement.
The university is also conducting two external reviews: one on the response to the shooting and another comprehensive safety assessment.
Clements emphasized that safety depends on preparation, transparency, and community trust.
The suspect, Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, was found dead in New Hampshire, and authorities linked him to the killing of MIT professor Nuno Loureiro.
The spring semester begins January 21, 2026.
