Wiltshire Council is upgrading M4 junction 17 with a £27M government-funded project to ease congestion, starting in 2027.
Wiltshire Council is moving forward with a £27 million upgrade to M4 junction 17 near Chippenham, approved by the Department for Transport in May 2024.
The project, funded in part by a £26.087 million government grant, will add traffic lights, expand motorway bridge lanes from two to three, widen the roundabout’s carriageway, and remove three laybys to ease congestion.
A contractor is expected to be selected in early 2026, with construction tentatively starting in 2027 and finishing by August 2028.
The work follows the reversal of controversial 2023 lane restrictions that caused safety and traffic issues.
Total costs could reach £31.9 million.
