West Virginia will ban SNAP use for soda starting Jan. 1, 2026, to fight obesity.
Starting on January 1, 2026, West Virginia will be the first state to implement a federal waiver prohibiting the purchase of soda with SNAP benefits.
The action, which is a component of Governor Patrick Morrisey's public health campaign, attempts to address the state's highest rate of obesity in the country.
All carbonated, sweetened beverages, including diet and sugar-free sodas, are prohibited; however, SNAP funds may be used to purchase water, juice, milk, and energy drinks.
The policy may be extended up to four more times before it expires on December 31, 2027.
Officials claim it promotes healthier spending, but retailers are concerned about lost sales, particularly in border towns.
Although recipients can still purchase soda with their own money, the change is in line with larger initiatives to improve nutrition.
