U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, D-Fla., denies 15 federal charges over allegedly keeping $5M in misplaced COVID funds meant for her family’s health company.
U.S. Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, D-Fla., maintains her innocence after being charged with 15 federal counts, including theft of government funds and money laundering, over allegations she conspired to keep $5 million in COVID-19 disaster funds mistakenly sent to her family’s health care company, Trinity Healthcare Services.
Prosecutors say the company, which had a vaccine registration contract, received $5 million instead of $50,000, and the excess was used for a $100,000 diamond ring and funneled to friends and relatives who donated to her campaign.
She was arrested in November, released on a $60,000 bond, and barred from traveling outside Florida, Washington, D.C., Maryland, and the Eastern District of Virginia, though she retains her congressional passport.
Her attorney claims the case stems from administrative errors and is politically motivated.
A hearing was rescheduled to January 20, 2026, to allow time for legal preparations.
She has pleaded not guilty and says she will not resign, emphasizing her cooperation with authorities.
