U.S. cities celebrate 2026 with themed New Year’s Eve drops featuring local foods and symbols.

Inspired by New York City's 1907 ball drop, dozens of American cities are commemorating the start of 2026 with distinctive New Year's Eve drops that feature regional cuisine and oddball themes. The Big Orange in Miami, the pineapple drop in Sarasota, the digital drone peach in Atlanta, and the 600-pound MoonPie in Mobile are among the events. Beach towns use beach balls and flip-flops, while seafood-themed drops include shrimp in Maryland and walleye in Ohio. Pickles, potatoes, and a 10-foot pierogi are highlights of Idaho, North Carolina, and Indiana. The contentious possum drop in North Carolina came to an end in 2019, but a stuffed possum is still being used in Tallapoosa, Georgia. Despite wind advisories in some areas, these celebrations are intended to increase tourism and community pride.
