Two lawsuits challenge Trump administration’s abrupt cancellation of $18.5M in Illinois school grants, citing procedural violations and harm to student services.
Two lawsuits have been filed in federal court challenging the Trump administration’s sudden termination of $18.5 million in federal grants for after-school programs, food pantries, and mental health services at 32 Illinois schools.
The grants, part of the Community Schools initiative, were canceled at the end of December without notice, with the Department of Education claiming the programs no longer served the federal government’s best interest.
The lawsuits, brought by ACT Now Illinois, the Brighton Park Neighborhood Council, and the American Federation of Teachers, argue the move violates administrative procedures, changes grant terms mid-cycle, and targets equity-focused programs.
Without an emergency injunction, schools risk losing vital services and staff when students return in January.
The Department of Education has not responded publicly.
