A train on Mexico’s new Interoceanic Corridor derailed, killing 13 and injuring 98.
At least 13 people were killed and 98 injured, including five in critical condition, when a passenger train on Mexico's Interoceanic Corridor derailed on Sunday close to Nizanda, Oaxaca. The train went off the tracks while negotiating a curve on its way from Salina Cruz to Coatzacoalcos, carrying 241 passengers and nine crew members. President Claudia Sheinbaum issued an order for government representatives to support the victims and their families after confirming the deaths. Teams of emergency responders, including medical and military personnel, were sent to the isolated location. The cause is still unknown, but the Mexican Attorney General's Office has opened an investigation. Potential causes include mechanical failure, track problems, or human error. A significant infrastructure project to connect the Pacific and Atlantic coasts and increase regional trade includes the 180-mile rail line, which will open in 2023. There is no longer any rail service on the line.
