flag A train on Mexico’s Interoceanic Corridor derailed Dec. 29, 2025, killing 13 and injuring 98.

On December 29, 2025, a passenger train on Mexico's Interoceanic Corridor derailed close to Nizanda, Oaxaca, resulting in at least 13 fatalities and 98 injuries, five of which were critical. The train went off the tracks while negotiating a curve on its way from Salina Cruz to Coatzacoalcos, carrying 241 passengers and nine crew members. After confirming the death toll, President Claudia Sheinbaum issued an order for emergency response, sending military personnel, government agencies, and medical teams to the remote location. Launched in 2023 as part of a significant infrastructure project to increase trade between the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, the 290-kilometer rail line has previously come under fire for its quick construction and regulatory short cuts. The cause is still unknown, but the Mexican Attorney General's Office has opened an investigation. There is no longer any rail service on the line.
