Tetsuzo Fuwa, former leader of Japan’s Communist Party and a key figure in modernizing its platform, died at 95 on December 30, 2025.
He joined the party in 1947, served 11 terms in the Lower House, and led major reforms in the 2000s, including dropping revolutionary language and accepting Japan’s emperor system and Self-Defense Forces.
He stepped down as party chief in 2006 and remained influential as director of the party’s Social Sciences Institute.
