Starting December 30, 2025, commuter rail passengers at Boston’s South Station must tap or scan tickets at new fare gates to enter track areas, completing a major fare collection upgrade.
The system, now active with 40 gates including 11 wide ones for accessibility, accepts mTicket, CharlieCards, printed CharlieTickets, $10 weekend paper tickets, Amtrak tickets, and military IDs, but not stored-value CharlieCards or contactless payments.
Staff will assist during the phased rollout, and conductors will continue checking tickets on board.
The move follows similar gates at North Station since 2022, with plans for Back Bay and Ruggles by 2026.
The MBTA and operator Keolis say the system improves fare collection and supports system funding.
