Russian oil imports into India are expected to drop to 1.1 million barrels per day in December 2025, the lowest level in over three years, according to shipping data.
The decline follows U.S. sanctions on Rosneft and Lukoil in late October, prompting Indian refiners, including Reliance Industries and state-owned IOC, to pause purchases from sanctioned entities.
Reliance resumed buying non-sanctioned Russian crude, while key refineries like Mundra and Mangalore Refinery took no Russian oil in December for the first time since 2022.
Despite earlier forecasts of 800,000 barrels per day, actual volumes dipped as low as 712,000 before rebounding.
Analysts expect a recovery in early 2026 as Reliance resumes shipments and maintenance delays at Nayara Energy’s Vadinar refinery may boost demand.
