Researchers found 200+ 166-million-year-old sauropod footprints in Oxfordshire, including Europe’s longest trackway.
In 2025, Oxford and Birmingham researchers uncovered nearly 200 new 166-million-year-old sauropod dinosaur footprints at Dewars Farm quarry in Oxfordshire, including Europe’s longest known trackway at 220 meters.
Using 3D modeling and drone photography, scientists documented hundreds of prints up to one meter long during a week-long excavation.
The site, part of a protected area since 2010 and privately owned, remains closed to the public.
Quarrying will not damage the fossils, as extraction stops above the fossil layer.
Preservation relies on detailed records and casts, as excavation risks damage.
Officials and the landowner stress the site must eventually return to farmland, but hope remains for future public access.
