Nepal ends $4,000 refundable Everest waste fee, replacing it with a non-refundable clean-up charge to combat pollution.
Nepal is ending its 11-year refundable $4,000 waste deposit program on Mount Everest, deemed ineffective in reducing trash, especially in high-altitude areas.
The new plan replaces the refundable fee with a non-refundable $4,000 clean-up charge per climber to fund a dedicated fund for a Camp Two checkpoint and mountain rangers to enforce waste removal.
The change, part of a five-year clean-up action plan, aims to improve monitoring and address growing environmental concerns from rising climbing numbers and tons of accumulated waste, including human waste.
The system requires parliamentary approval.
