A measles case has been confirmed in Contra Costa County, with the infected individual visiting multiple public locations in Walnut Creek and Lafayette between December 17 and 24.
Health officials warn that the highly contagious virus, which can linger in the air for over an hour, may have exposed others at sites including stores at Broadway Plaza and South Main Street, STAT Med, and the Kaiser Permanente emergency department.
Symptoms—fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and rash—can appear 7 to 21 days after exposure.
Unvaccinated people, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems are at highest risk.
Officials urge anyone who visited these locations during the specified dates to confirm measles immunity with a healthcare provider and ensure they’ve received two doses of the MMR vaccine.
No additional cases have been confirmed, but surveillance continues.
