An asteroid has been officially named after Kuang Tingyun, a distinguished Chinese botanist and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in recognition of her pioneering research on photosynthesis and photosynthetic membrane proteins.
The naming, approved by the International Astronomical Union, was formally announced in a ceremony on December 29, 2025, by the Institute of Botany under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Designated 29509, the asteroid was discovered in 1997 by the Schmidt CCD Asteroid Program at the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The honor highlights Kuang’s significant contributions to plant biology and acknowledges the institute’s broader impact on scientific advancement.
