An 11-month-old baby survived a house fire in Bellambi, New South Wales, on December 28, 2025, thanks to neighbor Jess Hanslow, who entered the burning home despite thick smoke and low visibility.
Hanslow, alerted by her neighbor's screams, crawled through the flames, followed the infant's cries, and rescued the baby from a snagged bassinet just before the house went up in flames.
By 7 p.m., emergency crews had arrived, and the baby was taken to Wollongong Hospital for smoke inhalation treatment, where they remained stable.
The mother and three other children received treatment on the scene.
Neighbors reported intense heat and shock, while Hanslow claimed her actions were motivated by empathy, stating that she would want someone to assist her child in a similar situation.
