Iowa voters choose a new state senator in a special election that could shift Senate control.
In a special election on Tuesday, voters in Iowa's 16th state Senate district will choose a successor to Democratic Senator Claire Celsi, who passed away. Republicans currently hold a 33-16 advantage in the state Senate, and the outcome of the contest between Democrat Renee Hardman and Republican Lucas Loftin could determine whether Republicans secure a supermajority. With Celsi winning 69% in 2024 and Kamala Harris receiving roughly 58% in the presidential contest, the district, which encompasses portions of West Des Moines and the surrounding areas, leaned Democratic. 37% of the nearly 45,000 registered voters identify as Democrats. The polls close at 8 p.m. local time, and the Associated Press won't project winners until the results are certain.
