India expands private testing of trade, health, and transport instruments under new metrology rules.
India has granted 12 Government Approved Test Centre certificates to 11 private entities, expanding private sector involvement in verifying 18 types of weighing and measuring instruments used in trade, healthcare, energy, and transport.
The move, enabled by amended Legal Metrology rules effective October 23, 2025, aims to reduce verification delays, improve accuracy, and enhance consumer trust through a public-private partnership model.
Certificates were awarded by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, with oversight maintained through government protocols, audits, and a new online portal to streamline applications.
Existing government labs will continue operating alongside private centers to ensure standardization and nationwide coverage.
