Emma Johnston, 52, the University of Melbourne’s first female vice-chancellor, has died from cancer less than a year after taking office in February 2025.
A leading marine ecologist and science advocate, she was known for her research, leadership in higher education, and development of the university’s Resilience strategy.
She authored 185 peer-reviewed papers, supervised over 35 students, and held key roles at CSIRO, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, and Science and Technology Australia.
Honored with the Order of Australia in 2018 and elected to the Australian Academy of Science in 2022, she was widely praised for her intellect, dedication, and commitment to equity in science.
Tributes called her passing a national loss.
Professor Michael Wesley will serve as acting vice-chancellor.
