On December 29, 2025, China launched large-scale military drills around Taiwan called "Justice Mission 2025," which included air, naval, and rocket forces.
The PLA Eastern Theater Command's exercises included live-fire drills, simulated port blockades, and sea-air coordination, as well as the establishment of restricted zones around the island.
Beijing stated that the drills were intended to counter "Taiwan independence" activities and external interference, particularly following the U.S. Arms sales to Taiwan and comments by Japan's prime minister implying military involvement.
Taiwan put its forces on high alert, deploying US-made weapons and conducting rapid response drills, despite condemning the exercises as provocative.
The move marks the first time China has explicitly stated that deterrence against outside intervention is a goal.
