Bangladesh’s interim leader pledges elections and referendum in February 2026, with U.S. support.
Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus confirmed Bangladesh’s interim government is ready for February 2026 parliamentary elections and a referendum, pledging firm action against disruptions.
During a farewell meeting with U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Tracey Ann Jacobson, Yunus highlighted progress on labor reforms, including the withdrawal of 45 of 46 cases against labor leaders and ratification of ILO conventions.
Jacobson praised the reforms as remarkable and supportive of foreign investment, reaffirming U.S. backing for the elections and continued humanitarian aid to Rohingya refugees, which Bangladesh’s leader called the largest in the region.
