West Berlin, a Mountain View German restaurant, is closing on New Year’s Eve after 11 years, following the death of founder Bill Ho’Opai, a Native Hawaiian and former Air Force member who developed a love for German food during service in Germany.
Ho’Opai, known as “Uncle Bill,” co-founded the Hula Hands chain, which continues operating.
The restaurant was a community hub, supporting local causes and hosting annual Oktoberfest events.
A memorial is set for January 23.
