Retiring Rotterdam assessor Bradley Canning opposes Debra Butler’s appointment, citing lack of experience despite her meeting state requirements.
Retiring Rotterdam assessor Bradley Canning has criticized the town board’s appointment of Debra Butler as his replacement, saying she lacks the experience needed for the role despite meeting state requirements.
Canning, who served since 2014, said Butler, a 20-year town employee and licensed appraiser, has no prior assessor experience and was not given adequate training before being confirmed on December 10.
He raised concerns in September and December with no response from the board, calling the process disrespectful and undermining trust.
While Butler must complete a six-week training course, Canning warned the appointment could risk errors in managing Rotterdam’s 13,000 parcels and active development.
The town board and Supervisor Mollie Collins declined to comment.
