Papua New Guinea’s National Capital District has launched its first Governor’s Netball Cup, backed by a K360,000 government investment to cover operations, logistics, and prizes.
The event, held at Rita Flynn Court, aims to boost youth engagement, promote public safety during the holidays, and advance gender inclusion by expanding opportunities for women and girls in sports.
Twenty teams are participating, with support from the Papua New Guinea Netball Federation and police, who view the tournament as a way to keep young people off the streets.
Governor Powes Parkop emphasized the initiative’s role in advancing gender equality and pledged future funding increases as participation grows, aligning with national goals ahead of the country’s 50th independence anniversary.
