Niger's junta ordered nationwide mobilization to combat rising jihadist threats following the 2023 coup.
Niger's military junta has declared a general mobilisation, ordering all citizens to comply with call-ups and requisitions to strengthen national defense against a prolonged jihadist insurgency.
The move, announced on December 27, 2025, follows the July 2023 coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum and comes amid ongoing attacks by Islamist militants linked to Al-Qaeda, ISIS, Boko Haram, and ISWAP, which have killed nearly 2,000 people over the past decade.
The junta has expelled French and U.S. forces, expanded the army to 50,000 troops, raised the officer retirement age, and formed a joint 5,000-member regional force with Mali and Burkina Faso.
It continues to encourage voluntary contributions to a military and agricultural fund established in 2023.
