India's Supreme Court to hear case on new Aravalli Range rule affecting mining in Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat.
On December 29, the Supreme Court of India will hear a suo motu case concerning the government's new 100-meter elevation rule for defining the Aravalli Range, which environmentalists claim could lead to increased mining in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Haryana.
Neelam Ahluwalia of Aravalli Virasat Jan Abhiyaan is among the critics who claim the change lacks scientific support and public consultation, endangering public health, groundwater, and delicate ecosystems.
Citing ongoing mining in 37 districts and an ongoing environmental impact assessment, they ask the court to revoke its November 2024 order.
A management plan for sustainable mining was previously ordered by the court, but no independent review has been finished.
