Guyana expands tax scam probe involving false EV classifications, with dealer charged and officials investigated.
The Guyana Revenue Authority is expanding its probe into a vehicle tax scam involving false classification of fossil fuel cars as electric or low-cubic-centimeter vehicles to evade taxes. BM Soat Auto Sales, a dealer, has been charged and ordered to repay over GY$200 million in recovered taxes. At least seven GRA officials, including senior staff, are under investigation for allegedly colluding to approve fraudulent inspections and misclassify vehicles, enabling tax evasion. Three vehicles were falsely labeled as electric, dozens misclassified by engine size, and forged documents are under scrutiny. The officials, each granted GY$500,000 bail, are to return to custody on December 29. Authorities suspect hundreds more vehicles may have been improperly cleared, and the investigation continues.
