Fernando Lovo, University of New Mexico’s athletic director since December 2024, is reportedly a top candidate to succeed Rick George as athletic director at the University of Colorado, where George plans to step down in spring 2026.
While no agreement has been finalized and the University of Colorado Board of Regents must approve any hire, Lovo’s experience at Texas, Ohio State, and Houston has made him a strong contender.
UNM confirmed it is aware of media reports but stated no leadership changes have occurred and athletics operations continue normally.
Lovo’s tenure at UNM began amid challenges, including the departure of football coach Bronco Mendenhall.
Colorado’s search remains in early stages.
