Speaking on December 27, 2025, ahead of January 15 local elections, he accused the BJP of prioritizing contractors and publicity over nature and public interest, citing a National Green Tribunal pause on the project.
Thackeray urged a halt to tree felling, demanded an environmental impact assessment, and pledged civic improvements if his opposition alliance wins.
The government maintains that only non-essential trees will be removed, with compensatory afforestation at a 1:10 ratio, and insists temporary infrastructure is vital for pilgrim safety.
