Southern California's wettest Christmas in 54 years caused deadly floods, mudslides, and evacuations, with over 100 rescued and two deaths.
With strong winter storms and atmospheric rivers bringing record rainfall, Southern California had its wettest Christmas season in 54 years.
This resulted in extensive flooding, mudslides, and debris flows.
Particularly in areas burned by recent wildfires, heavy rains saturated hillside soils, causing hazardous debris flows that buried homes, washed out roads and bridges, and necessitated evacuations.
Over 100 people were rescued by emergency personnel, including 21 from stranded cars.
At least one weather-related death was reported in San Diego and another in Sacramento.
The National Weather Service warned of continued flash flood and mudslide risks, with flood watches in place and more rain anticipated near New Year's Eve, even though the rainfall had lessened by Friday.
