A South African man detained after claiming asylum despite Trump’s promises faces prolonged detention and due process concerns.
Benjamin Schoonwinkel, a 59-year-old white Afrikaner from South Africa, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in September 2025 after entering on a tourist visa and claiming asylum, despite expectations of preferential treatment following former President Donald Trump’s rhetoric about Afrikaners facing persecution.
Though Trump promoted Afrikaner resettlement, Schoonwinkel was not part of the formal refugee program and thus faced mandatory detention under standard U.S. immigration policy.
He remains at the Stewart Detention Center in Georgia, where he works for $2 a day, and his legal team says his due process rights were violated after documents were seized.
His case has drawn attention to the gap between political promises and immigration enforcement practices.
