A rehabilitated Ethiopian wolf, Terefe, survived a gunshot wound, rejoined his pack, and raised pups, proving recovery is possible for endangered wolves.
In December 2025, conservationists confirmed the success of a groundbreaking effort to rehabilitate Terefe, the first Ethiopian wolf ever captured, treated, and released after a severe gunshot wound in 2020.
After 51 days of care in a makeshift shelter, the wolf was released with a GPS collar and successfully rejoined his pack, later forming a new family and raising pups.
His survival demonstrated that rehabilitation is possible for critically endangered species, helped shift local attitudes toward wolf protection, and strengthened conservation efforts for the rare carnivore.
