A quarry in Seaham, NSW, approved for 30-year expansion to support major infrastructure, despite public opposition over environmental and traffic concerns.
A Hunter quarry in Seaham, owned by Boral, has been approved for a 30-year extension and expansion, increasing its size to 59 hectares and boosting annual output to up to 2 million tonnes to support New South Wales’ $118-billion infrastructure projects.
Despite 49 of 53 public submissions opposing the plan over environmental and traffic concerns, the project was deemed regionally significant.
Conditions include a nearly 18% reduction in size to protect wildlife habitats, a production cap of 1.2 million tonnes until a key intersection upgrade, and a revised water management plan to protect the Grahamstown Dam catchment.
The expansion is expected to support 35 full-time jobs and additional contractor roles.
