A powerful windstorm damaged California's Lick Observatory, closing it temporarily and exposing its telescope to rain.
Lick Observatory in California has been temporarily closed after a Christmas Day windstorm with gusts up to 114 mph damaged the Great Refractor dome, tearing off half its shutter and causing structural harm to the adjacent Great Hall.
Though the telescope itself was unharmed, its precision lenses and electrical systems are now exposed to rain, raising concerns about further damage.
No injuries were reported.
The observatory, which has operated for nearly 140 years, remains closed as staff assess structural safety and begin repairs.
Reopening is pending a timeline to be determined.
