Mould in a NSW cancer ward, linked to patient deaths, sparks conflict over risk severity and delayed repairs.
NSW Health officials have given conflicting assessments on mould contamination in Calvary Mater Hospital’s cancer ward, with one official calling it “very serious” and another stating the on-the-ground risk is “very minimal,” drawing criticism from patients, politicians, and advocates.
The mould, identified as Aspergillus—a deadly pathogen for immune-compromised patients—has been linked to higher-than-expected pneumonia deaths, prompting a class action over losses between January 2024 and April 2025.
Despite scaffolding being erected in November, cladding repairs to fix chronic leaks remain delayed, and NSW Health declined to disclose penalties or enforcement actions taken against the hospital’s private operator, Novacare, under their public-private partnership agreement.
