A $2.3 million laser restoration project began in spring 2025 to clean and preserve the 1,840-year-old Column of Marcus Aurelius in Rome, using short-pulse lasers and chemical treatments to remove centuries of grime and harmful residues from past restorations.
The 100-foot-tall column, featuring over 2,000 figures on 18 marble drums, depicts Roman military campaigns and mythological scenes.
Restorers have worked on 16 levels of scaffolding, aiming to improve visibility, protect the marble, and combat erosion from pollution and weather.
The project, the most extensive use of laser technology on an ancient monument to date, is set for completion in early 2026.
