Maternal minoxidil use linked to infant hair growth and eye issues in 45 cases, per global study.
A global study analyzing data up to March 2025 found that maternal use of minoxidil, a common over-the-counter hair loss drug, is linked to infantile hypertrichosis in at least 45 cases under 24 months, with 22.2% tied to maternal exposure and 44.4% due to accidental contact.
The research, based on the WHO’s VigiBase database, also identified over 1,600 eye-related adverse events in infants, including eyelid swelling, blurred vision, and serious retinal conditions like central serous chorioretinopathy.
Despite being contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding, the drug’s widespread availability and lack of regulation raise safety concerns, prompting calls for stronger warnings, better patient counseling, and improved storage to prevent unintended infant exposure.
