Illinois state parks are offering free, family-friendly New Year’s Day hikes as part of the nationwide First Day Hike initiative, encouraging outdoor activity to start the year.
The event, launched in 1992, highlights the 250th anniversary of the U.S. in 2026 and the importance of public lands.
Participating parks include Starved Rock, Giant City, and Illinois Beach, among others, where visitors can sign in, get stickers, take photos, and share experiences using #ILFirstDayHikes.
All Illinois state parks, historic sites, and natural areas remain free to enter.
