Allen Olson, former North Dakota governor (1981–1984) and attorney general (1972–1980), died at age 87 on December 26, 2025. A University of North Dakota graduate and U.S. Army lawyer, he led early state studies on strip mining and land reclamation. As governor, he championed drunk driving prevention, supported the Garrison Diversion project, and helped create the Department of Human Services and Cross Ranch State Park. His 1984 re-election bid faltered after a tax filing report, leading to his loss to Democrat George Sinner, the last to hold the office. After leaving politics, he practiced law in Minnesota, co-owned a die-casting company, led a community bank association, and served on the International Joint Commission under President George W. Bush. He was remembered as a principled public servant. Funeral arrangements are pending.
