Five arrested in Uttarakhand over racial attack that killed Tripura student Angel Chakma in Dehradun.
Five people have been arrested in Uttarakhand in connection with the December 9 attack on two Tripura students, Angel and Michael Chakma, in Dehradun, where Angel died from severe stab wounds after being assaulted with knives and blunt objects.
The incident, allegedly racially motivated, occurred after the brothers were reportedly targeted with racial slurs.
Police, using CCTV and witness accounts, arrested five suspects—three adults and two juveniles—while one suspect, Yagya Awasthi from Nepal, remains at large with a non-bailable warrant and a reward offered for his capture.
The case has prompted calls for a fast-track trial and a dedicated anti-racial violence law, with critics citing delays in filing the FIR and failure to invoke relevant legal provisions.
The victim’s family has received compensation, and his body was returned to Tripura for burial.
