China to enforce standard Mandarin and Chinese characters in public, international, and online spaces starting Jan. 1, 2026.
China has revised its language law, effective January 1, 2026, designating the third week of September as a national publicity week for standard Mandarin and written Chinese.
The update requires standard Chinese on signs and materials at international events in China, mandates its use in global Chinese education, and requires online content like games and publications to use standardized Chinese.
The original 2001 law established Mandarin and standardized characters as official, with over 80% of the population now able to speak Mandarin and literacy exceeding 97%.
The revisions aim to strengthen language standardization across public, international, and digital domains.
China hará cumplir los caracteres estándar mandarín y chino en los espacios públicos, internacionales y en línea a partir del 1 de enero de 2026.
