Venezuela freed 99 election detainees on Christmas 2025 amid U.S. pressure, but over 900 political prisoners remain.
According to government and human rights sources, Venezuela freed 99 people who had been detained following the contentious July 2024 presidential election.
However, rights organizations contest the precise figure, with some confirming only 45 to 71 releases.
Many of the detainees, who were primarily detained on charges related to protests, are still subject to restrictions even after being released under conditional measures.
Despite the gesture, at least 902 political prisoners are still in custody, according to groups like Foro Penal and Justicia, Encuentro y Perdón, and new arrests are still being made.
The releases coincide with increased maritime and military pressure from the United States on Venezuela, including strikes and the seizure of oil tankers close to its coast.
Officials speculate that the action was calculated to reduce international tension.
