Ten years after devastating floods, York’s defenses are upgraded, but risks remain due to climate change.
Ten years after the 2015 Boxing Day floods that submerged over 600 properties in York, the Environment Agency has completed major flood defense upgrades, including a modernized Foss Barrier protecting 1,600 homes, a new storage area for 490 homes in Strensall, and ongoing work to safeguard 160 homes in Clifton and Rawcliffe.
Investments included new pumps, backup generators, and barrier elevations.
Despite these improvements, the EA warns flood risks persist due to climate change and urges residents to check their risk, sign up for alerts, and prepare.
Meanwhile, the Two Ridings Community Foundation continues supporting flood-affected families, having raised over £1.5 million for aid and resilience efforts.
