North Carolina DMV launches 2026 plan to cut wait times and boost service with new offices, staff, and online options.
The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles is launching a five-year plan in 2026 to improve customer service amid rising demand from population growth and federal REAL ID requirements.
The agency aims to reduce long wait times—currently nearly two hours—by cutting average in-office waits to 15 minutes through new offices, more staff, and self-service kiosks.
Half of all transactions are targeted for online completion to decrease in-person visits.
NCDMV Commissioner Paul Tine called the initiative a "playbook" to transform the agency into a high-performing, customer-focused organization.
The full plan is available on the NC DMV website.
