India's top court urges nationwide ban on social media for under-16s, citing child safety risks.
The Madras High Court has recommended India consider adopting an Australia-style ban on social media use for children under 16, citing risks from online pornographic content.
While dismissing a 2018 public interest litigation, the court stressed that parents alone cannot ensure child safety online and urged the central and state governments to strengthen awareness campaigns, develop action plans, and promote parental control tools.
It criticized existing efforts as inadequate and called for proactive measures, including public education and stronger enforcement, until comprehensive legislation is enacted.
